Sundargarh teams sweep Nehru hockey titles

Host Sundargarh district made a clean sweep of all three titles in the State-level Nehru Hockey Tournament, which concluded here at Panposh Sports Hostel today. The champion teams qualified to participate in the All-India Nehru Hockey Tournament to be held at Delhi in three phases between October and November.

Birsa Munda Vidyapeeth (Rourkela) won the under-17 junior boys` title with 6-0 victory over KISS (Bhubaneswar). Sibren Lakra scored a brace, while Krishna Tirkey, Samir Ekka, Nahas Barwa and Anil Rout shared the other four goals.

In the under-17 junior girls` final, Birsa Munda Vidyapeeth handed over a similar 6-0 drubbing to
KISS. Jiwan Kishori Toppo and Rinky Kujur struck twice each, while Janhabi Pradhan and Premanjali sounded the board once each.

In a hard-fought under-15 sub-junior boys` final, Town High School (Sundargarh) edged out Birsa Munda Vidyapeeth 3-2. Bikash Kujur, Albret Tete and Ibrahim Toppo scored for the winners, while Akash Ekka and Shakti Kujur reduced the margin for the losers.

Current players of the Indian women hockey team Namita Toppo, Lilima  Minz and Anupa  Barla witnessed the finals. The three-day tournament is being organised by the Department of Sports & Youth Services.
